Explain the methods you used to attract your audience in your AS coursework.

Throughout our coursework, we tried to link every part to our audience through camera work, Mise En Scene, sound and editing. Our target audience was in the range of 18 to about 35 which linked in very nicely with our chosen genre; horror. From the start we wanted it to have a dramatic effect on our audience, so we were pretty much set on having allot of blood in it, which in turn and through audience research, made our target audience aim towards males slightly more than females.

An idea was put forward in a group discussion that we should filter out all the colours in our piece, except red. We felt this would really help the audience perceive the film in a darker, sinister effect. It then came to our knowledge that the film Sin City used the same colour filter to us, only they had a reason to use it. We then had to go back and think of a background story for the killer to give us a reason to use it, such as he was born with colour-blindness. Through various researches we found that the closest colour-blindness was for the person to only be able to see shades of red and blue. With this taken into deep consideration we came up with some ideas for the new name, which would replace our current name, Viewpoint, such as; The Killer in Rose Coloured Glasses. We weren’t sure exactly on what we would name it so we carried on, hoping that through filming and audience research something would feel right, but though it ought to have something to do with Rose Coloured Glasses. As the duo-chromatic effect for the colour-blindness (medically called tritanopia) would be through the killer’s eyes, we would make everything regular colours in third person view, and only use the colour filter in first person view.

Throughout the filming process we used a number of methods to involve our audience as much as we good and give a sense of realism. We used handheld cam rather that steady cam to create realism as it gave the feeling that the audience are in the room, especially when they were viewing in 1st person through the killers eyes as well as using allot of MCU's and a few CU's for the audience to clearly see almost feel what’s going on. We had a very large range of props in our piece, ranging from a hammer to a chainsaw! Although these are everyday DIY tools which might be found in a workshop (our setting), they were quickly turned into violent murder weapons with our effect full use of CEMS.
Our lighting was very light in the scenes of the policeman to give the audience a sense of safety and then rapidly darkens in the killer scenes to create a powerful feeling of danger and magnifying the sinister perception on the audience. The killers costume was very simple, everyday cloths such as jeans and a T-Shirt which related to the audience as most people own these two makes of clothing and makes them feel insecure realising that you may walk past a killer in the street without realising it.

When we came onto editing, the cutting rate was quite fast in-between scenes to create tension and pace. To help the pace we were trying to create, we added some upbeat yet very dark and gloomy music to create a very unique atmosphere. This was used to fully engage the audience in the thriller opening making them want more and more. As we nearly finished, we realised something very disappointing, the colour filter we were attempting to use did not work on held held cam and in order for it to work it must be a steady cam shot. We tried everything but sadly not make it work and last minute changed the name back to Viewpoint. Since Sin City was a big success we would have really like to include a similar colour filter as this would really attract our target audience into watching our piece, but with this knowledge and experience we now know a huge amount more for work in the future.

I think our audience response was positive and they all seemed to enjoy it.
