Evaluation Question 1

Stayed

One of the main conventions in our music video was our costume. We kept in the Indie style of clothing to relate our video to the genre of our song. The costume an artist’s wears in their music video may influence the way their fans dress as many fans see their artists as idols and/or role models.
Here below it is shown how the artist in our music video and the artists from Mumford and Sons wear the same style of clothing. For instance they are both wearing a medium long coat with chinos for a smart/casual look which is reinforced by the fact that they are not wearing ties although they are wearing smart shirts.

Both of these shots are tracking shots with the artist walking towards the camera which represents a large amount of confidence which is important for an Indie Rock band to have.

Another convention we stayed with was the split screen technique. We used this for our master shot to display the band members in different locations, playing the same song. This showed that although the band had split up physically, they are still connected through their music.

Below is a screenshot of our split screen and a screenshot of The Plain White T's music video, Hey There Delilah. Although the split screen for Hey There Delilah is showing the same scene but at different angles and perspectives and ours is showing four different scenes, I think our still gives a really good effect and meaning to our video. This is that although they are separated physically in terms of their location, they are still closely connected through their music.

Developed
A convention of our music video which we developed is band members. Each of our band members were set in different location which reflected their backgrounds and personalities.
Shown below is a screenshot of our drummer and the one of We the Kings video, Check Yes Juliet.

As we can see on the right the drummer is set in a stereotypical house party setting for the master shot, whereas our drummer is set in the middle of a big field. This could represent how he is cut off from the outside world and has an open relaxed personality.
We developed conventions for our performance as we set the band members in different locations and did this by using split screen which I spoke about earlier. This gave an unusual yet interesting feel to our master shot and worked really nicely with our narrative.
Below we can see a split screen of our performance and one of ‘Rehab’ by Amy Winehouse. In Amy Winehouse’s one all the band members are in the same room which is very usual for almost every music video, so we developed that by setting our band members in different locations.

Challenge

We challenged conventions really well in our music video through the use of introductions and flashbacks. Both of these are completely unique as no other indie rock music video has flashbacks or an introduction like ours. Below are the screen shots for our introduction on the left and our flashback on the right.
